Abstract

SUMMARYDuring the four years previous to 1983, seven foetuses with hernia into the umbilical cord, omphalocele or gastroschisis were encountered. It is not considered possible to distinguish between minor omphalocele and hernia into the umbilical cord using high resolution ultrasound equipment, nor is it necessary, because of the good prognosis and low incidence of associated malformations.Conversely, omphalocele major tends to occur in the epigastric and hypogastric regions, and has a high incidence of associated malformations, with a poor prognosis, and may be difficult to recognise.
