Abstract

Evidence for a possible benefit of omega-3 fatty acids in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease was critically appraised in Evangelos Rizos and colleagues' recent meta-analysis.1 20 randomised clinical trials published between 1989 and 2012, which included 68 680 patients, were analysed with regard to all-cause mortality, cardiac death, sudden death, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Both primary and secondary prevention trials were assessed and treatment time was at least 1 year. Yet none of the outcome measures reached statistical significance, which leaves uncertainty about possible benefits.
