Abstract

The International Physics Olympiad competition will be held this month in Havana, Cuba. This is the first occasion on which this essentially European competition has been held in another continent. The Olympiad competition has grown rapidly since its beginnings in the Eastern Bloc in 1967; Britain first entering in 1984. It now attracts teams of able pre-university students from both Eastern and Western European Bloc countries, North and South America, China and Australia. A total of 33 countries participated in the 1990 International Physics Olympiad, which was held in Groningen in the Netherlands.
