Abstract

During his pontificate, Pope Benedict XIV had to deal with many issues concerning marriage. One of the results of his activity became the creation of the ecclesiastical office of defender of the marriage bond. This article presents the circumstances that influenced his decision in the long and short term. Poland has a special place in this process. The infamous statistics of divorces and ecclesiastical process de nullitatate matrimonio trials have become a motive for protecting the institution of marriage. One of its manifestations became the office of the defender of the bond, which is still inscribed in the activities of the ecclesiastical judiciary today.
