Abstract

Evaluation of the operation of two Westinghouse load tap changers (LTCs) was made to determine their performance in one naphthenic-type EPRI oil, NH, and in one paraffinic-type EPRI experimental oil, PB. The evaluation was based on the following: both LTCs were operated mechanically to temperatures to -40/sup 0/C in both oils with various motor supply voltages and through different tap position changes; load interruption capability of a LTC that interrupts the arc in the oil was determined by interrupting a 1000-amp load approximately 150,000 times in both oils; and a mechanical life test of one-million operations was conducted. No appreciable difference was noted in the operation of the LTCs in the two oils.
