Abstract
Abstract The use of straw as an adsorbent material in the mechanical recovery of oily pollutants is reviewed with emphasis given to existing methods for the harvesting of the oil soaked straw. State-of-the-art harvesting techniques, while admittedly crude and needing improvement, is complicated by the wide variety of conditions and subtleties encountered in oil pollution incidents. The development of oil soaked straw harvesting equipment, possibly by the agricultural implement industry, to be used by various types and configurations of vessels will permit greater usage of the demonstratably effective application of straw in oil pollution incidents.
