Abstract

ABSTRACT Cores from a newly drilled observation well close to a long-time water injector showed 20% lower residual oil saturations than anticipated. Laboratory measurements were made on four live oils at 215° F and 3015 psia to study this phenomena. The results showed: –residual oil volumes decreased by 18%,–density of the live oil increased up to 10%,–Stock Tank Oil gravity dropped 3° API,–the bubble-point pressure dropped by 82%, and–viscosity of the oil in the reservoir tripled. All the changes observed are detrimental to the later recovery of the residual oil remaining after a water flood.
