Abstract

On the basis of various basins throughout the globe, which have a volume of sedimentary infilling of less than 25,000 km/sup 3/ and proven petroleum occurrences, we consider the factors that controlled the presence of commercial accumulations of hydrocarbons in them. Among these, the principal role is played by increased temperatures and paleotemperatures, the high velocity of sedimentation, active fault tectonics contributing to the emigration of the hydrocarbons from the internal parts of the petroleum-source sequences, and complete closure and small area preventing intense dispersion of hydrocarbons during the process of lateral migration. Using the factors recognized, we discuss the geological conditions of some of the small sedimentary basins in the USSR.
