Abstract

How a sample of rural elderly adults view literacy in their lives was ascertained in a series of ethnographic interviews. Themes that emerged in the interviews resulted in three assertions: (a) These older adults were motivated to change by a balanced desire to satisfy both coping and expressive needs, (b) The illiterate older adults’ earlier means of compensating for the lack of literacy skills were not effective during their later years, (c) The lack of adequate literacy skills had a negative impact on the Hues of these older adults. Recommendations for further research are made on the basis of both a review of the literature and the assertions of the individuals interviewed in this study.
