Abstract
Abstract North of Ohariu Valley the active transcurrent Ohariu Fault bifurcates and encloses a fault zone that passes through Porirua City. The fault began as a zone of en echelon fractures in the late Pliocene or early Quaternary; later movements have been concentrated at the zone margins. The latest 5 m right-lateral displacement probably occurred about 200 years B.P. At Porirua the average frequency of movement is about once every 840 years, and most movement has taken place on the west branch fault. Post-glacial displacements have occurred on both branch faults.
