Abstract

Gaylyn Studlar is Rudolf Arnheim Collegiate Professor of Film Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she directs the program in film and video studies. She is the author of This Mad Masquerade: Stardom and Masculinity in the Jazz Age and In the Realm of Pleasure: Von Sternberg, Dietrich, and the Masochist Aesthetic. She has coauthored four anthologies, most recently Titanic: Anatomy of a Blockbuster and John Ford Made Westerns. She is currently working on a social history of women and Hollywood film culture.
