Abstract
We have studied the progeny of 449 women operated on for valvular heart disease. We found a clear, graded increase in total genetic wastage (abortions, stillbirths and malformations) from 17.7% in pregnancies before any type of heart surgery, to 28% in those after the first mitral valvotomy, 33% after the implantation of biological valve(s) and 41% after the implantation of metallic valve(s) and subsequent long-term anticoagulation.
