Abstract

Abstract Thirteen offshore caisson structures are now under construction for North Sea sites. One, the Ekofisk Caisson, has now been in service through two winters. Three more were successfully founded during the summer of 1975. All of these are founded in relatively firm soils. Extension of this structural concept to other areas of the oceans will frequently involve founding on weaker and more unstable sediments. The requirements of the foundation are reviewed here, including the interaction between soil, structure, and environment. It then explores a number of means of solving the problem including reduced net weight of structure, penetration of the structure into the seafloor, development of passive resistance to sliding, and increasing the bearing and passive resistance by drainage, overloading, preloading, chemical injection, and freezing.
