Abstract
Donations to health and medical research (HMR) are in the recent news. Mining magnate Clive Palmer recently pledged AUS$100M to medical research – an Australian record – though somewhat eclipsed by 'gigaphilanthropists' the Gates' multi billion dollar inputs to research and health delivery. The prefix 'gigas' is Latin for 'giant' and it is worth asking where are the giants of Australian giving. With Australian philanthropist, former Microsoft VP Daniel Petre recently slamming the generosity of richer Aussies (Connors 2008, see also Madden and Scaife 2008), it is timely to see where HMR giving stands. How do we compare with other nations and what is the forecast for the far horizon?
