Abstract
The present article aims to examine the ecological engagements with the Bengali crime fictions, Uncle versus the Poachers (Kakababu bonam Chorashikari) by Sunil Gangopadhyay and The Poisonous Smell of Flower (Ful e Bisher Gandhyo) by Samaresh Majumdar. After drawing a connection between ecology and selected crime fiction, the article endeavors to show how these two works of crime fiction are critical of the capitalist commodification of animals (and other nonhuman beings). The article also seeks to illustrate how these works draw a connection between consumerism and species loss to foster an “ecological awareness” among the readers and to explain the significance of attaining a “multispecies ethnography.”
