Abstract

William R. Utall is an experimental psychologist who currently is Professor of Engineering at Arizona State University. He received his Ph.D. in 1957 from Ohio State University and has been on the staff of the IBM Watson Research Center, Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan, and Program Director at the Naval Ocean Systems Center in Hawaii. Professor Utall has written more than 15 books and 125 articles. Stephen E. Palmer received his Ph.D. in psychology from University of California at San Diego in 1975 under the direction of Donald A. Norman and David E. Rumelhart. Since then he has been a member of the Psychology Department at the University of California, Berkeley. He has also been the Director of the Institute for Cognitive Studies and Director of the undergraduate major in cognitive science at Berkeley for the past 10 years. A member of the Society of Experimental Psychologists and a former editor of Cognitive Psychology, he is the author of Vision Science: Photons to Phenomenology, a comprehensive resource and textbook about vision (MIT Press, 1999).
