Abstract

SUMMARYA study has been made of the propulsive and pressure characteristics of the œsophagus and its sphincters in eight normal subjects and in 65 patients with œsophageal symptoms, by means of water‐filled, open‐ended tubes connected to external strain gauge transducers. The patterns of ordered and disordered œsophageal motility have generally conformed to those found by others. The results suggest that this method of investigation permits a precise diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders of the œsophagus, and is a useful ancillary aid in the differentiation of those disorders from suspected organic obstruction.Of the 65 patients with symptoms, 14 had hiatus hernia, 11 diffuse spasm, seven achalasia, seven scleroderma, four obstructive dysphagia and the remainder normal motility.
