Abstract
In today's alarming moment, the concept and idea of sustainable development should be actualized again in Serbia, especially among those sectors and institutions, as well as experts and citizens in the broadest sense, where proper attention is not yet paid to it. Regardless the fact that the concept of sustainable development in Serbia is mentioned at all levels, from individual scientists, laymen, companies, municipalities, to the state level, if carefully analysed what we hear or read, we will make sure that it is most often used without understanding or incorrectly, that is, it is used as a mantra that minority people know what it means and how important it is today. For this reason, this article in the first part recalls the birth and development of the idea of sustainable development, with an evaluation of its implementation during the development of Serbia in a few last decades. In the second part, several sustainable development branches are explained and commented, which are of particular importance from the point of view of the use of natural resources and the impact on biodiversity, the environment, the quality of life, and social milieu. It is about sustainable architecture with urban planning, sustainable construction, and sustainable industry. This is illustrated by examples of sustainable architecture and industry. Emphasis is placed on the impact of these activities on climate change, the environment, and the quality of life of а community. Measures from UN studies as well as limitations and threats to their implementation are also presented.
