Abstract

Abstract An integrated parameter, odor index, is developed to describe an odor and to evaluate odor debate technologies by incorporating the parameters of the odor concentration, odor intensity, and hedonic tone. An assumption is made that the odor index is equivalent to the geometrical mean of odor intensity and hedonic tone. The mathematical models for the odor intensity versus odor concentration, hedonic tone versus odor concentration, and odor index versus odor concentration are determined from the analysis of experimental data. The analysis indicates that the Steven’s law applies to the intensity and hedonic tone versus odor concentration, the exponents in these two functions are identical, and that intensity and hedonic tone have a linear relationship.
