Abstract

The detailed anatomy and histopathology of an asymmetrical degenerative condition of the eye of young rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdneri) held in stew ponds on the Zomba plateau, Malawi, Central Africa, are described. The condition begins as a greyish haze on the cornea progressing to cataract and ultimately the entire ocular tissue becomes phthisical, leaving an empty socket. No evidence for an infectious aetiology was adduced, but in view of the irregular feeding regime with a high level of raw animal viscera in the diet, it was considered that the condition could well be similar to the nutritional cataracts described for other species on such diets, although in such arrisolated population a genetic predisposition could not be ruled out.
