Abstract
Extensive knowledge of ocular pathology is an important part of the broad foundation that every ophthalmologist needs to gain true understanding of the clinically observed diseases of the eye. Much of the substance of this field, of course, is general pathology applied to the eye region. However, the combined efforts of pathologists with special interest in the eye, and of ophthalmologists with an understanding of pathology, have resulted in the accumulation of much specific knowledge and the creation of a pathological subspecialty that is equally important to ophthalmologists as well as pathologists and that is known as ocular or ophthalmic pathology. Progress made in this field has been unusually great and, thus, all books on the subject are either limited in their content or outdated.
