Abstract

Objective: Invesitgating diagnostic distribution and treatment strategies of child and adolescent psychiatry patients may help protective mental health interventions and services. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the sociodemographic characteristics, diagnosis and treatment distributions, age variability and factors predicting multiple drug use among children and adolescents who applied to a private child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic in Sakarya. Material and Methods: The files of 718 patients who applied to Sakarya Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Institute for 12 months between March 2019 and March 2020 were evaluated retrospectively. The files of 33 patients who were found to be missing a significant part of their information were excluded from the study. The remaining 685 patient files were included in the study group. During the first application to the outpatient clinic, an evaluation was made based on the semi-structured interview form and the psychiatric examination information made with the patient file, in which the information received from the family and the patient were processed. Results: In the study, the data of 685 patients between the ages of 2-18 (8.4 ± 4.5) 38.7% of them were female and 61.3% of them were male. The most common diagnosis were ADHD (34.4%), normal mental examinaion and Generalized Anxiety Disorder respectivly. The retrospective elimination method performed to predict the use of more than one psychiatric drug was performed with logistic regression analysis and it was observed that the model was significant and male gender (OR: 2.61) and comorbid psychiatric disease (OR: 1.11) predicted the use of more than one psychiatric drug. Conclusion: In our study, the sociodemographic characteristics, frequency of diagnosis, and drug treatments applied as a result of examination were examined in patients aged 2-18 who referred to a child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic. The fact that the clinics in different geographical regions in our country carry out studies with a similar structure will make the diagnosis and treatments frequently encountered clear.
