Abstract

Effective communication has an important place in the socialization process of the individual. The individual communicates with his environment from the moment he is born. However, the child encounters many environments and people throughout his life; thus, his life experience increases, changes and develops. Education is undoubtedly the most important force affecting the cognitive, affective, social and personality development of the child in this process of change. The school child, who spends much time r with his peers and teachers, understands the importance of having a place in the society. During this period, the psychological, cognitive, affective and social development of the child should be supported by the environment in the right directions. The most important tool to be used for these correct directions is children's books. A lot of information is conveyed directly or indirectly to children through educational messages that include knowledge, values, attitudes, interests and behaviors in children's books, and at the same time the child gains aesthetic awareness. The messages, thus, settle in the minds of children and affect their attitudes and behaviors in the face of events and situations they encounter throughout their lives. In this study, educational messages in children's books were identified. At the same time, effective communication elements in the chosen children's books were also examined, and communication barriers were determined. Educational messages in the books were grouped as educational messages that support social, mental, and personal development. Effective communication, on the other hand, was examined in terms of empathy and the use of ego language in the books investigated; The conflicts of the characters in the books with himself, with other characters and with the society were determined. This study aims to determine how children's books can be used for the individual and social development of the child. The study was conducted in accordance with qualitative research techniques; document analysis method was used to collect data. The study group was composed of children's literature products named "Boy in Striped Pajamas" and "Saving the Queen" chosen using the random sampling method. Based on the preliminary results of the study, which is still in progress, it can be stated that the educational messages and effective communication elements contained in the examined books are of a particular quality that supports the cognitive, affective and social development of children and gives them positive behavior.
