Abstract

The level structure of 221Fr has been reinterpreted in terms of the 1 2 ± , 3 2 ± and very tentative higher-lying 3 2 ± parity doublet bands predicted for the 87th proton in an axially symmetric, reflection asymmetric field with ϵ 3=0.08. Decoupling parameters of the K= 1 2 ± parity doublet bands are large and of opposite sign and approaching an absolute value of ∼3.8. The alpha decay hindrance factors of states in 221Fr imply anomalously large mixing between the parity mixed Nilsson orbitals with the approach of shell model spectroscopy.
