Abstract

We discuss N = 1 locally supersymmetric grand unified theories in which both the gauge group and supersymmetry are spontaneously broken in the same sector. It is proven that all such theories naturally contain light SU(3) C octet, SU(2) L triplet, and U(1) Y singlet chiral superfields in the low energy lagrangian. We show that these superfields lower the prediction of the top quark mass by at least 20 GeV, facilitating agreement with the experimental data.
