Abstract

The stones of the Kalabsha-Gate, re-erected in Berlin 25 years ago had been found as part of the filling material of the temple of Kalabsha built under Augustus. I then dated the reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions of this gate to the earliest period of Octavianus' reign, a dating doubted because the arguments then offered did not seem sufficient. Elaborate and detailed proofs are presented here. In the eastern part of the Roman Empire Greek epitheta and cult names familiar through their use by Ptolemaic rulers were soon added to the name of Octavianus/Augustus. For reasons of religious policy Octavianus used specific hieroglyphic forms of writing these epitheta on the Kalabsha-Gate. He thus tried to create and establish a continuity between his reign and the Ptolemaic Dynasty.
