Abstract

Ocimum basilicium seeds extract ( OBSE ) was used as an antioxidant and an ecological inhibitor against corrosion of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy in 3 wt% NaCl solution. Moreover, the structure of extract phytochemicals was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectroscopy. An antioxidant study using DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) showed that the studied extract had good antioxidant activity. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency increased with the increase of the concentration of OBSE up to 95.5% at a concentration of 1 g/L. The polarization curves reveal that through mixed inhibition control the corrosion of AA2024 was retarded by OBSE . Surface studies ensure the effectiveness of OBSE and the reduction of the surface roughness of AA2024. Also, the adsorption of OBSE molecules on the surface of AA2024 occurs according to the Langmuir isotherm model. • OBSE was used as efficient and ecofriendly antioxidant and corrosion inhibitor for aluminium in 3 wt% NaCl medium. • Antioxidant study using DPPH showed that the investigated extract had a good antioxidant activity • A high inhibition efficiency of 95.3% was achieved at 1g / L of extract using EIS data. • Adsorption of catechin obeyed the Langmuir model.
