Abstract

Introduction. Providing a high-quality services is essential for the proper functioning of the therapeutic, diagnostic and therapeutic process. Any negligence in this area leads to the endangerment of values basic and fundamental to every human: health and life and in the case of taking care of pregnant women, it also affects on the developing fetus. For this reason, the holistic model of obstetric care should assume not only ensuring biological, psychological and social needs of the patient, but also the provision of high quality services. Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of midwifery care in a selected ward of pregnancy pathology. Material and methods. The research material was a group of 100 pregnant women hospitalized in the selected therapeutic entity of Pomeranian Voivodeship, in the ward of pregnancy pathology, in the period from July to October 2014. The method of analysis of literature as well as the method of diagnostic survey were used. To assess the quality of midwifery care provided in the pregnancy pathology ward a modified BOHIPSZO questionnaire was used. Methods of statistical analisys have also been used in the study. Results and conclusions. The quality of midwifery care differs in individual standards. The standard of patient's safety was rated at the highest level (94.61%), while the standard of informing the patient in accordance to her wishes was rated the worst (67.94%). The overall care factor in the tested pregnancy pathology ward was 86.55%. Based on the analysis of individual criteria it is possible to identify areas of care realized at a high level, as well as those needing improvement. The assessment of the quality of midwifery care correlates in individual fields with the chosen characteristics of the studied group. Nursing Topics 2015; 23 (3): 465–470
