Abstract

In this paper, the biological characteristics of commercially important oceanic squids, Japanese common squid Todarodes pacificus and flying squid Ommastrephes bartrami in the North Pacific, including population structure, reproduction, growth, migration and feeding are discussed. History and present state of Japanese squid jigging fishery and squid drift gillnet fishery are then presented. Finally, methods of stock assessment, estimated stock parameters, annual variation in stock size and resource management for these two oceanic squids are dealt with.
