Abstract

In April, the Ocean Drilling Program Planning Committee finalized objectives for seven legs of drilling in areas ranging from the equatorial Atlantic to the Arctic Ocean. Specific objectives include characterizing the nature of tectonism at transform and collisional margin settings, Arctic glaciation, and gas hydrates. To investigate ridge crest hydrothermal systems, which play a fundamental role in transferring a large fraction of the heat from the Earth's interior to the surface, Leg 158 is planned for September 28 to November 23, 1994, at the TAG hydrothermal mound at 26°N on the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge. The drilling leg will characterize the fluid flow, geochemical fluxes, and associated alteration and mineralization of an active hydrothermal system on a slow‐spreading ridge.
