Abstract

A major international project using undersea acoustics to directly measure ocean climate has been funded with a $35 million research contract procured by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego.Scripps scientists are the leading investigators in the 30‐month Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate (ATOC) project, which is being funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The project will be led by Walter Munk, a professor of geophysics at Scripps. Eleven institutions and eight nations—Australia, Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Taiwan, and the United States—are involved in the project.
