Occurrence of tomato spotted wilt tospovirus in horticultural crops and weeds in the Czech Republic in 1992/19971

Abstract

Tomato spotted wilt tospovirus (TSWV) was found in 1992 in three glasshouses in the Czech Republic. Although the infected plants were destroyed, the virus was detected later in other glasshouses infested with Frankliniella occidentalis. The virus was identified on the basis of host range, enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and electron microscopy. The ornamental plant species most frequently infected with TSWV were Dendranthema morifolium and Zantedeschia sp. With regard to vegetable crops, TSWV infection was frequently detected in tomatoes and capsicums. The common weed hosts were Stellaria media and Galinsoga parviflora.
