Abstract

Spore assays of the sewage fungus, Leptomitus lacteus were made in Windermere. The assays suggested that at the lake margin there was one spore in about 1430 ml of water. Spores were fewer at the lake centre, one in about 10 l of water in one assay and less than 1 in 21 l of water in another assay. This disparity in assays between lake margin and lake centre indicates that Leptomitus lacteus is active in decomposition processes in the lake littoral; other observations show that both plant and animal materials can serve as substrata.
