Occurrence of tetrodotoxin in the frog Atelopus oxyrhynchus

Toxicon 27, 819–822, 1989.—Alcohol extracts from the frog Atelopus oxyrhynchus were toxic to mice when injected intraperitoneally. The toxin was purified by gel filtration on a Sephadex G-15 column, and was identified as tetrodotoxin by thin-layer chromatography and GC-MS analysis of the alkali-hydrolyzed and trimethylsilylated derivative giving the same pattern as the C 9-base of tetrodotoxin.
