Abstract

Abstract Commercial fishermen reported removing 1,006 sport fishes from their nets during the 5-month 1980-1981 season. Observations of field monitors who accompanied these fishermen during retrieval operations revealed that the commercial gill nets and trammel nets (89-114 mm bar mesh) used for harvesting buffalofish (Ictiobus spp.) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) in two mainstream Kentucky reservoirs had minimal impact on sport fish. The sport-fish catch was less than 1/1,000 m of net, with 65% of those in good condition when released. No largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) mortality was observed in the 39 km of gear monitored.
