Abstract Of 458 paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) collected from the Missouri River (South Dakota-Nebraska) from June 1975 to August 1976, 165 (36%) bore scars and 46 (10%) had severed rostrums. Small fish and young fish were as likely to be scarred as large fish and old fish. Scarred fish had lower condition factors than unscarred fish. Scars originated primarily from injuries sustained as a result of collisions with powerboats, and from wounds associated with snag-fishing.
