Abstract

Occurrence of PCDDs and PCDFs in pulp and board products was studied. The major PCDDs were hexa, penta and tetra chlorinated congeners containing at the most a few pg g −1 2378-TCDD. The PCDFs were mostly tetra chlorinated congeners of which the 2378-TCDF was dominant. PCDD and PCDF content of bleached hardwood pulp was low compared to boards which contained both softwood and hardwood. In the bleaching experiment of hardwood pulp where the chlorine was replaced by chlorine dioxide, the amounts of PCDDs and PCDFs were close to undetectable (<0.1 pg g −1 2378-TCDD equivalents). There was no clear correlation between total chlorine content and PCDD/PCDF content of the pulps.
