Abstract

Natural growth of Musa ornata Roxb., which we record for the first time in a wild condition in south India, is found along the slopes of the Eastern Ghats in certain moist regions of Araku valley in Andhra Pradesh. Roxburgh (1824) who described Musa ornata, recorded it as 'a native of Chittagong'. He had also seen specimens growing in the 'botanic garden at Calcutta' and probably his description was based on these cultivated specimens. Cheesman (Classification of the Bananas, III in Kew Bull. 4: 24-28 (1949)), gives a good description of this species from a clone grown in the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture, Trinidad, obtained originally from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Port of Spain, Trinidad, or raised from seed received from the 'Buitenzorg Garden' [Bogor], Java, and mentions that his description 'may not in all details cover the whole species'. A detailed description of this species as observed from its natural condition is given below and its distribution and taxonomic position discussed.
