Abstract

Abstract The formation and occurrence of magnesium containing mineral sources is discussed with a focus on magnesite, magnesium brines, and dolomite. Production of synthetic magnesia from seawater and magnesium chloride containing brines is also outlined, all of which can be used as feedstocks for the production of magnesium metal. The production of metallic magnesium through the two primary production routes, namely metallothermic and electrolytic and their variants, is also discussed.
