Abstract

Acropora prolifera is a first-generation (F1) coral hybrid of the staghorn coral A. cervicornis and the elkhorn coral A. palmata. We observed large thickets of A. prolifera in the southern areas of the Parque Nacional Arrecife Alacranes (PNAA), off the northern Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Thickets were located at < 2 m depth, interspersed with seagrass Thalassia testudinum and A. cervicornis. This is the first record of large A. prolifera thickets in the southern Gulf of Mexico.
