Abstract

Alate aphid counts on sweet corn plants showed that the major maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) vectors arresting on this host were Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), M. avenae (F.), and Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Seasonal monitoring of these species by yellow-pan traps showed that R. maidis was the most consistently occurring vector and that all species except M. persicae were present early enough in the season to introduce and spread MDMV in early-season sweet corn. Generally, maximum activity was between the first week of July and the third week of August with M. persicae lagging ca. 2 weeks behind the other species in maximum occurrence.
