Abstract

Summary Evidence along three lines was presented which suggests the occurrence of Forssman heterogenetic antigen in the nematode, T. spiralis. Rabbit serum which contained anti-trichinella antibody lysed sheep red blood cells, the hemolysin was absorbed by known heterogenetic antigen (guinea-pig kidney emulsion), and trichinous rabbit serum produced characteristic reactions upon injection into two animals whose tissues contain heterogenetic antigen, the guinea-pig and the chicken. A preliminary attempt to elucidate the effect upon the disease trichinosis of the presence of heterogenetic antigen in its etiological agent was inconclusive, although it appeared that reaction to the intracutaneous test commonly used in the diagnosis of trichinosis might be modified in animals with high titers of heterophile antibody.
