Abstract

1. 1. The occurrence of 20β-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase activity was studied in vitro in the kidney and liver of the lizard Tiliqua rugosa. The conversion of [ 14C]progesterone substrate to [ 14C]20β-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one was used as an indicator of enzyme activity. 2. 2. Significant enzyme activity was found in both the kidney and liver. This enzyme is also present in the testis but is absent from the adrenal and ovary. The distribution of 20β-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase in the tissues of T. rugosa is essentially similar to that found in other vertebrates.
