Abstract

SummaryIn the male greater bushbaby, Galago crassicaudatus, a specialized cutaneous scent gland occurs in the sternal region. This skin patch measures about 130 cm2 and is characterized by the presence of sparse bleached short hair associated with droplets of yellowish secretion.Histological sections of this skin patch revealed the presence of a few lobules of alveolar sebaceous glands in association with hair follicles in the upper dermal zone. A well developed layer of hypertrophied coiled apocrine gland tubules lay deep in the dermis. The apocrine glands seem to pour their secretion into the pilosebaceous space. It is suggested that the secretion of these predominantly apocrine scent glands may have functional significance in the marking behaviour of these arboreal and nocturnal animals.RésuméChez le galago mâle (Galago crassicaudatus) on observe un glande cutanée odorante particulière dans la region du sternum.
