Abstract

Background Thoracic trauma appears to be a major contributing factor to injury mortality. The presence of pneumothorax (PTX) complicates the clinical course of thoracic trauma and aggravates its prognosis. Consequently, the accurate and early diagnosis of PTX is crucial and its occult type, which escapes recognition on plain radiography, presents a serious challenge in everyday clinical practice. This review aims to present and clarify the current diagnostic and therapeutic approach of occult pneumothorax (OPTX) and proposes algorithms that could be useful in everyday clinical practice.
