Abstract

Three patients are described with clinical and laboratory findings characteristic of thyrotoxicosis factitia but without proof of self-medication. The diagnosis was supported by the demonstration of accelerated thyroxine turnover comparable to that found in a patient with iatrogenic myxedema receiving large doses of thyroxine. Psychological evaluation of these patients is presented. The term "occult" thyrotoxicosis is suggested for this type of factitial disorder.
