Abstract

Leishmania infections are among the most common parasitic diseases, with about ten million infected persons and 400 000 new infections every year.1 In Europe, infections with Leishmania major or Leishmania tropica are increasingly encountered due to travel and immigration. Both types of leishmaniasis may cause long-lasting ulcers on the skin that heal with scar formation. Many treatments have been developed, but some are painful or have serious side-effects. Because of the low risk-benefit ratio, treatment is frequently discouraged if lesions are not located on the face or on the hands.
