Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is characterized by repetitive breathing interruptions during sleep. These interruptions often lead to snoring, poor quality and fragmented sleep with arousals and desaturations. Daytime manifestations include feeling unrefreshed, excessive sleepiness and fatigue. These symptoms lead to an increased risk of road traffic accidents and falls, occupational hazards and diminished quality of life in the elderly. Even without symptoms, sleep apnea increases the likelihood of confusion during the night, hypertension, cardiovascular morbidity and stroke.
