Abstract

Nearly half of all births in England in the first three months of 2023 occurred in an obstetric theatre. Besides the elective and emergency caesarean sections, 10% were instrumental births, with the majority of these likely to have taken place in an operating theatre.1 Given the prevalence of operative births and postpartum surgical procedures, midwives need the knowledge and skills to advocate for women and parents and ease their transition through what can be a very challenging experience.
