Abstract

Approximately 55-80% of deliveries are complicated by some form of laceration, usually first or second degree. Some 10% of deliveries are affected by third or fourth degree lacerations which involve the anal sphincter complex. While there is no consensus on the classification of these injuries, the Obstetric Anal and Sphincter injury(OASIS) system is commonly used to classify third and fourth degree lacerations. These injuries can lead to long-term sequelae of pelvic floor disorders with implications on quality of life.
